INDIA CELEBRATES 60th Year of INDEPENDENCE DAY

This week, India celebrate the 60th anniversary of Independence Day after British India was split.Exactly 59 years to the day when Jawaharlal Nehru made his famous Tryst With Destiny speech and India became free, it is time not only to look back and remember the architects of our freedom but also to look ahead and face up to the challenges we are facing. The past 59 years has been long and interesting. There have been commendable successes along the way: From a nation whose industries and agriculture was completely stagnating at the time of Independence, India achieved self-sufficiency by way of the commendable green revolution. The Indian economic model that started off as a mix between socialism and capitalism made great leaps in the past decade, after the liberalization measures initiated by Narasimha Rao and Man Mohan Singh. The increasing economic progress also meant great strides in the social set-up of India. Education, mass communication, the recent IT boom are all striking examples of the changing social fabric of the country. While the overall picture has been looking very rosy the past few years, certain niggling worries remain. Security remains a major concern: Infiltration of LET and other militant groups of India into areas that were earlier considered safe (Mumbai, Bangalore) make terrorism an imminent threat. The recent July 11th blasts in Mumbai and the October 29th blasts in Delhi are examples of a spreading menace. While on one hand, India has made progress regarding the complicated border issues with China and Pakistan, the reports of militants infiltrating India through Nepal and the North east make it a huger problem that before. India - August 15th 2006 - A country with tremendous challenges, and even greater hope. All in all, it would be safe to say that India will continue to be a part of life of a billion people and more.
